We must have a consistent plan for reopening, says ISM

The ISM's chief executive Deborah Annetts has responded to the government's roadmap for recovery, outlining the need for continued support for musicians

While the news of a return to live performances by summer has been welcomed across the sector, the Incorporated Society of Musicians has pointed out the need for the government to continue to support musicians in what continues to be an uncertain and difficult time.

Chief executive Deborah Annetts has called for next month's budget to include a package of support that lasts until musicians can safely resume work.

'The chancellor should maintain the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme at the same 80% level until the end of this crisis,' she says. 'We also need either an expansion of the eligibility criteria or the creation of a suitable alternative for the three million of freelancers who have been excluded.'

She has also highlighted the need for a 'consistent plan for reopening', so that venues are not opening and closing frequently, costing them money. Annetts has called for a 'government-backed reinsurance scheme, similar to the one created for the TV and film sector, in the absence of suitable products being offered by the commercial market.'
