The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) has today announced the appointment of conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla to the role of associate artist. From December 2023, Gražinytė-Tyla will take up her new role which will see her perform regularly with the orchestra.

Currently principal guest conductor, Gražinytė-Tyla’s new role will continue her relationship with the CBSO and its choruses. She will work closely alongside chief conductor and artistic advisor Kazuki Yamada, associate conductor Michael Seal, and assistant conductors Rita Castro Blanco and Charlotte Corderoy.

CBSO chief executive Emma Stenning said: ‘I am thrilled to formalise our continuing relationship with Mirga through this exciting new role, ever strengthening her incredible bond with the musicians of the CBSO. As Associate Artist, we look forward to her regular return to the orchestra, bringing her intense musicality and creative flair to performances for our audiences both here in Birmingham, and further afield.’

Having held the role of music director with the CBSO from 2016 to 2022, Gražinytė-Tyla continued the legacy of predecessors including Sir Simon Rattle, Sakari Oramo and Andris Nelsons. In the upcoming season she will be making her debuts with New York Philharmonic, Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden and the Teatro Real Madrid.

Gražinytė-Tyla will launch her new role with the CBSO next month with a programme focusing on the music of Eastern Europe with pianist Onuté Gražinytė and a host of soloists pulled from the CBSO’s own ranks: clarinettist Oliver Janes, flautist Marie-Christine Zupancic and violist Adam Römer.
