Deutsche Grammophon marked this year's World Piano Day with the announcement that the label has signed an exclusive agreement with International Chopin Piano Competition winner Bruce Liu.

Liu’s first digital release with the label - a recording of Chopin’s Nocturne in C sharp minor, KK IVa/16 - came out on Friday (1 April). Further singles will follow, along with two albums; one with a French theme, as Liu was born in France, and one featuring the work with which Liu made his UK debut - Tchaikovsky’s Concerto No.2.

Liu said: ‘I hope becoming part of [the DG] family will give me plenty of opportunities to collaborate with some very talented artists from different musical fields and backgrounds, as well as working with the great team who produced my Chopin Competition album.’

Born to Chinese parents in Paris in 1997, Liu moved with his father to Montréal at the age of six. He studied at the Montreal Conservatoire from 2011-2018 and won the grand prize at the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal Competition aged just 15.

Now 24, the pianist’s career took off in October 2021 when he became the first Canadian to win the International Chopin Piano Competition. The event had been delayed for a year due to the pandemic, but Liu’s work and research during lockdown paid off, earning him the competition win and a worldwide performance career.

Dr Clemens Trautmann, president of Deutsche Grammophon said: ‘The Chopin Competition and all the concerts he has given since have shown the world an intelligent and dynamic young artist whose pianism, imagination and spontaneity are simply electrifying.’
