Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) has announced the extension of its contract with music director Gustavo Gimeno. Set to expire in June 2025, the new contact will allow the Spanish conductor to lead the orchestra until the end of the 2029/30 season.

Having held the role since the orchestra’s 2020/21 season, Gimeno is the tenth music director since TSO was founded in 1922. Following the difficult period of the pandemic, the orchestra is currently celebrating 100 years since its first performance in April 1923.

Mark Williams, TSO’s chief executive officer, said: ‘I am thrilled that the strong partnership Gustavo and I have developed as the artistic and administrative leaders of this exceptional Orchestra will continue through the end of the decade. Our creative alignment and collaboration are serving this great institution and vibrant city.’

In addition to his role with TSO, Gimeno is also music director of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg as well as holding the position of music director designate with Madrid’s Teatro Real, where he will progress to the role of music director in 2025. He also collaborates as a guest conductor with recent debuts including the Staatskapelle Berlin and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

Gimeno has built a strong relationship with TSO’s musicians. Jonathan Crow, TSO concertmaster, said: ‘Since the Orchestra’s first encounter with maestro Gimeno, it was evident that he possessed the ability to help us explore our artistic potential in remarkable ways. Under his baton, my fellow musicians and I have never felt more confident in our abilities or prouder of our performances.’
