Joanna Baker CBE will take over from Colin Buchan who steps down after nine years in the role

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) has today announced the appointment of Joanna Baker CBE to the role of chair of the SCO Board. Baker takes over from Colin Buchan who steps down after nine years in the role.

Baker has served on the board of the SCO for the past three years and brings over 35 years of experience of leadership in the culture sector to her new role, Baker is currently an independent consultant and non-executive director working across the UK and internationally. 

In a statement released today the SCO said: ‘Joanna brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for the arts to her role as Chair. With an impressive background in arts management, including 12 years as managing director of the Edinburgh International Festival, and a proven track record of leadership and governance, Joanna’s expertise will undoubtedly contribute to the continued growth and success of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.’

As well as her wirk as with the Edinburgh International Festival, Baker’s career prior to her independent consultancy also includes a two-year period as executive director of IMPACT Scotland, the charity behind Edinburgh’s Dunard Centre, as well as global touring with Welsh National Opera and Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet

Alongside her new role Baker is also chair of the Scottish advisory group National Partnership for Culture, a trustee of the Edinburgh International Culture Summit Foundation and co-founder and director of Primadonna Festival. Baker was awarded a CBE for her services to the arts in 2020.

Baker said: ‘It is a great privilege to have been appointed as chair of the SCO at such an exciting moment in the Orchestra’s history as it approaches its 50th Anniversary season. I have been an admirer – and fan – of the SCO for many years, and my admiration for this wonderful orchestra has only deepened since joining the Board. I am delighted to have this opportunity to contribute further to the SCO’s bright future.’
