Royal Academy of Music: safeguarding report was 'thorough and detailed', says chair of inquiry

Professor Peter Kopelman, who chaired the Review of Safeguarding Arrangements at the RAM , says there was much to praise in the way the Academy is run

Responding to claims by Norman Lebrecht in his Slipped Disc blog that the review into safeguarding was no more than a 'mild rap on the knuckles' of the RAM,   professor Kopelman  described the report as 'very thorough and detailed'.

He pointed out that the panel had spoken to 40 members of staff and students, and had not been made aware of any issues currently within the Royal Academy. In fact, he said, 'Every student we spoke to felt that they were very privileged to be at the Academy and very complimentary of the institution.'

Prof Kopelman said that the panel had identified a 'very good system of support for students', but that they had also found 'opportunities to extend that - in particular, looking at ways in which students could report concerns anonymously, because that was the key message from students.

'We do not see our report as simply for the Academy,' he concluded, 'but we think it is applicable to all conservatoires in the UK.'
