English Touring Opera (ETO) has announced the appointment of writer, director and producer Robin Norton-Hale to the role of general director, effective from July this year. She will succeed director James Conway who has held the role for 20 years.

Norton-Hale is currently artistic director & chief executive of touring opera company OperaUpClose which she co-founded in 2009. Norton-Hale began working with the company in 2003 as a press and marketing officer and is currently a regular collaborator with ETO. Her most recent contribution to the company has been the libretto for an upcoming opera for the company’s autumn 2022 season.

In addition to her work with ETO and OperaUpClose, Norton-Hale has collaborated with Malmö Opera and Ravenna Festival as well as artists including Laura Bowler and Mark Ravenhill. In her new role she will lead the artistic planning and strategic direction of the company, working on partnerships with organisations, composers, writers and performers as well as widening the performance repertoire.

James Conway will remain artistic director of ETO in a part time capacity until the end of 2022, alongside interim chief executive Michael Garvey before moving on to pursue freelance opportunities.
