Ruisi started his new role during the orchestra's recent tour of Wales

Sinfonia Cymru has announced the appointment of Roberto Ruisi as its new orchestra leader. Ruisi had been involved in the orchestra as a violinist for five years

Ruisi started his new role during the Sinfonia’s recent tour of Wales. His new role will see him involved in the orchestra’s auditions and searches for new talent as well as having valuable input in the orchestra’s programming, music choices and direction.

He said: ‘This role means I get to be involved for the long term, helping new and exciting musicians to develop and gain some amazing experiences at the beginning of their own careers.’

Having played the violin since the age of two, Ruisi is a recent winner of both the Royal Over-Seas League String Prize and the Swiss Ambassador’s Award. As a teenager, he led the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for three consecutive years and was a Foundation and ABRSM Scholar at the Royal College of Music. Upon graduation he was awarded the RCM Tagore Gold Medal.

Peter Bellingham, chief executive of Sinfonia Cymru said: ‘With our focus on young musicians in the early years of their careers, it’s important that we have a leader who is not only an exceptional musician but also someone who can inspire and support the young players and provide artistic leadership. Robbie fits that profile perfectly.’
