A rare ‘Bow Piano’ designed by Danish architect Poul Henningsen will be put on display later this year at the LAPADA Fair in London’s Berkeley Square from 27 September to 1 October. Designed in 1937, the piano is one of only eight made by Andreas Christensen Flygler of Copenhagen to Henningsen’s design.

Hatchwell Antiques, which is selling the instrument, has painstakingly returned the piano to its former glory. The piano movement, made by Stuttgart-based piano action manufacturer Renner, has been restored to concert pitch.

Allan Hatchwell of Hatchwell Antiques said: ‘Hatchwell Antiques has specialised in PH pianos for many years and we are very proud to be able to be the present caretaker of this very rare and wonderful pian, and to have returned it to its full and original glory.’

Born in 1894 in the Gentofte commune just north of Copenhagen, Henningsen is regarded as one of Denmark’s most influential designer of buildings and bridges as well as smaller projects including lighting and pianos. Henningsen’s fascination with light extended to sound when he was asked by Scandinavian piano maker Andreas Christensen to collaborate in producing some cases for their pianos. Made from walnut, brass and black lacquer, the ‘Bow Piano’ has a perforated designed to allow the transmission of sound when closed.
