The Hallé has announced the selection of Italian-born pianist Alexander Gadjiev as this year’s winner of the Terence Judd-Hallé Award.

Selected by the BBC, Gadjiev receives a cash prize of £7,000. As prize-winner he will give a concerto performance with the Hallé, a chamber recital at Hallé St Peter’s and a solo recital as part of the Manchester Mid-day Concert Series.

Gadjiev said: ‘It is a great honour for me to be the recipient of this year’s Terence Judd-Hallé Award and to be therefore connected to one of the leading orchestras on the continent, the Hallé Orchestra.’

Born in the Italian town of Gorizia to two piano teachers, Gadjiev held his first solo recital aged ten. As well as being a BBC New Generation Artist, he won first prize at the Sydney International and Hamamatsu Piano Competitions and Montecarlo World Piano Masters as well as second prize in the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition.

The Terence Judd-Hallé Award honours the work and life of Terence Judd, who died in 1979 at the age of 22. The award has been presented in association with the Hallé since 1982, and was relaunched in 2021 in partnership with the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme, with the aim of supporting a young pianist each year who is coming to the end of their time on the scheme.

When receiving the award, Gadjiev talked about the commemorative aspect of the award: ‘[Terence Judd] was a performer of true passion, incredible temperament and dedication towards his art and music in general… I would like to think that this award also means to carry on a legacy of uncompromising piano playing, filled with utmost dedication and true passion.’
