Guildhall School of Music & Drama is offering seven new short online courses in a range of skills for creatives

Guildhall School of Music & Drama is offering seven new short courses for January – March 2021, which will take place online.

The courses cover a range of subjects - from architecture and acting to marketing and technology. Those applicable to music industry professionals are outlined below:

  • A Beginner’s Guide to Marketing & PR in the Creative Industries

Participants will learn about different aspects of developing a marketing strategy, such as how to identify and engage audiences, organise a marketing budget, grow in profile online, and develop and implement a PR plan.

Suitable for artists, creatives and those with small businesses, who are looking to develop their understanding of marketing and have little or no prior experience.

  • Jazz History, Part 1: From its Roots to Bebop

This course aims to explore how and why musical traditions evolved into the music that we call jazz, and its development up to the 1942 American Federation of Musicians recording ban. An exploration of the early 17th century will look at the pre-history of jazz and how it came to be, whilst a visit to the early 20th century will focus on the music of Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk in New York, visiting musicians from New Orleans, Chicago and Kansas City on the way.

Delivered across six sessions, this course is for anyone who is interested in jazz and/or early American history.

  • Music Production in Logic Pro X: Intermediate Course

This course will cover a wide range of topics designed to expand the participant’s knowledge and understanding of music technology, whilst improving the quality of their productions. Topics include techniques in sound synthesis and advanced audio processing, as well as mixing music and mastering audio. It will cover sound design using subtractive and FM synthesis techniques, MIDI FX, audio editing with Flex Time, creative audio sampling and principals of audio mixing with a focus on tone, dynamics and space.

Delivered across six sessions, this course is intended for more experienced composers, producers and sound designers, or as a suitable follow-on to Guildhall’s Music Production in Logic Pro X: Beginner Course.
