The final round of the 75th Geneva International Music Competition’s oboe section took place last week at Geneva’s Victoria Hall. Finalists Natalia Auli from Venezuela, Louis Baumann from France and Zhiyu Sandy Xu from Australia were all awarded third prize.

In a final round broadcast live on Radio Télévision Suisse and live streamed online, finalists were accompanied by the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, conducted by Douglas Boyd. Tthe three candidates each selected one of two prizewinning concertos by winners of the Composition Prize 2019: Dune by Columbian composer Daniel Arango-Prada and L’Instant by Hinako Takagi of Japan. All competitors also performed Strauss’ Concerto Op. 144.

Venezuala’s Auli won the Audience Prize, Students Prize and Young Audience Prize and all three finalists were jointly awarded the Rose-Marie Huguenin Special Prize, which offers them an international concert tour. However, the competition jury, chaired by Alexei Ogrintchouk and also including Rossana Calvi, Nora Cismondi, Gordon Hunt, Eugene Izotov, Yiu Song and Marie-Luise Modersohn, chose not to attribute first and second prizes.

In addition to its official prizes, the Geneva International Music Competition offers a career development programme which includes two years of concert management, as well as CD recordings, international concert tours and professional workshops. This programme provides vital support and advice to help boost winners’ careers.
