Music charity JAM (John Armitage Memorial Trust) has opened its annual Call for Music. The initiative offers composers the opportunity to have their music performed in in JAM’s annual Music of Our Time concert.

The Call for Music was paused after 2019’s iteration due to the pandemic and makes it’s returned this year. Candidates have 6 weeks to make their submissions before the Call for Music deadline (24 October 2022).

Successful submissions to this year’s Call for Music will be performed by the Chapel Choir of Selwyn College, Cambridge, Onyx Brass and organist Simon Hogan, conducted by Michael Bawtree. The Music of Our Time concert will also include the world premiere of a new work by Mark-Anthony Turnage, at London’s St Bride’s Church on 21 March 2023. The concert will be professionally recorded to help composers promote their work.

Submissions are open to composers aged over 18 who were born in the UK or are living or studying here. A maximum of three submissions can be made per candidate. Scores must be no longer than 10 minutes and can be submitted in pdf form via the JAM website.

Founded in 2000 by Edward Armitage, Charles Cochrane and Timothy Jackson in memory of John Armitage, JAM is an arts organisation focused on promoting new music. It has given performances of over 180 new works, submissions and commissions, across 22 years.

JAM also hosts JAM on the Marsh, its annual multi-arts festival bringing creative education and opportunities to Kent’s deprived Romney Marsh area. Highlights from this year’s festival are available to view online for free throughout this week through JAM Virtual 2022 including JAM commissions from Paul Patterson, Judith Bingham and Timothy Jackson.
