Peter Moore, who in 2008 became the youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Musician competition at the age of 12, will make his BBC Proms debut at the Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday (16 August)

Now the principal trombone of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and professor of trombone at the Royal Academy of Music, Moore will perform George Walker’s Trombone Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Moore said: ‘I’m truly honoured to share this fantastic work with the Proms Audience; I don’t suspect that it will be familiar to many. The concerto demands rhythmic precision, attention to detail yet with glimpses of expansive melodic lines which have an expressive sonorous quality which are a delight to explore.’

The first black composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1996 George Walker composed his trombone concerto in 1957, making it one of the earliest known modern trombone concertos.

Moore’s performance follows a period of absence of trombone soloists at the BBC Proms, with the most recent appearance being a performance given in in 2003 by trombonist Christian Lindberg. ‘That is a shame but a great honour for me,’ Moor said in an interview with Classical Music published last month, ‘I think you have to approach it by seeing it as a privilege – doing things for the instrument and bringing it to people who wouldn’t have heard it, certainly in that capacity and that setting.’

Moore works to promote the trombone as a solo instrument in contemporary classical music through performing world premieres of new pieces for the instrument.

As well as winning the BBC Young Musician competition in 2008, Moore was a BBC New Generation Artist between 2015-2017. As a soloist, he performs with the LSO as well as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Lucerne Symphony, Belgrade Philharmonic, Thailand Philharmonic and Polish Chamber Orchestra.

Peter Moor will make his Proms debut at Prom 40: Vasily Petrenko conducts The RPO on 16 August 2022, at the Royal Albert Hall. You can find more information, including tickets, here.
